Joya Paul, mixed media encaustic artist
Joya Paul is a mixed media artist and is primarily self-taught with formal training in encaustic which she has explored over the last three years. Encaustic is the ancient art of painting with molten wax. Joya's latest work combines photographic imagery, collage, oil paints, pastels and encaustic to create haunting landscapes and dream like imagery. Her photo based work begins by taking various images from a collection of her own photographs, re-arranging them, adding colour, text or handwritten notes.
For her encaustic recipe, she uses a mixture of beeswax and microcrystalline (petroleum-based wax) and adds oil paints to the melted wax to create the paint. The encaustic paint is applied over the photographic image, creating texture, depth and transforms the image to give it an ethereal and luminous quality. Joya’s work has been displayed in many private collections throughout North America.
Workshops
I facilitate private and group workshops for a cost of $115 for the day which includes equipment, wax and a limited pallette. These can be scheduled on any Friday, Saturday or Sunday depending on availability. Dual workshop weekends are held once a month for those who are interested in learning from both myself and Ann Shier (www.annshier.com), another Toronto encaustic artist and my studio partner. Our approaches differ however, it makes for a unique learning experience. I focus on collage, photo transfers, mixed media whereas Ann has a more sculptural approach. Please email me at info@joyapaul to schedule a workshop or for more information.
